With less than two weeks to go before Election Day, and with candidates galore in attendance, political affiliations were set aside at the The East Fishkill Democratic Committee’s inaugural Citizen of the Year Award brunch on Sunday, October 26, 2008.
The event was named for and honored Dominick Cannizzaro. Mr. Cannizzaro, who died on April 13, 2008, was a three-term Superisor of the Town of East Fishkill, from 1986-1991.
Guests, who mingled with members of the Cannizzaro family and several life-size photos of Dominick Cannizzaro, included John Hickman, East Fishkill Town Supervisor, Diane Jablonski, Dutchess County comptroller and former Wappinger Town Supervisor Joseph Ruggeiro.
Mr. Cannizzaro’s sense of humor and his kindness were mentioned repeatedly, along with some examples of his practical jokes. The award was accepted by Mr. Cannizzaro’s son, Anthony and his granddaughter Jessie.
Mr. Cannizzaro was a past president and founding father of the Joe DiMaggio Sons of Italy Lodge #2248 in Hopewell Junction; a past president of the Lion’s Club; a member of the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce; and a co-founder of the Colette Cannizzaro Memorial Golf Tournament for Cooley’s Anemia Research.
He was the owner and operator of Hopewell Auto Parts on Route 376 for many years.
Other attendees at the event included Ron Friedman, candidate for East Fishkill Town Justice; Irene McIlaney, candidate for East Fishkill Town Justice; Joan Posner, candidate for Dutchess County Family Court Judge and Anne Rubin, candidate for the New York State Assembly, 103rd District.
The event raised funds for the Dominick Cannizzaro Foundation.
